Road Traffic Management Corporation Reports Over 1,000 Arrests for Road Offences During Easter Period in South Africa

Since the Easter long weekend began, more than a thousand road users have been apprehended, and 900 vehicles have been seized in a comprehensive law enforcement operation across all nine provinces. The operation focused on various violations such as drunken driving, falsification of documents, reckless driving, operating vehicles without permits, and overloading of goods and passengers.

The highest number of vehicle impoundments occurred in KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga due to public transport permit violations. Launched on 20 March 2024 in Mkhondo, the 2024 Easter Season Road Safety campaign aimed to promote responsible road use, reduce accidents and deaths, and encourage behavioral change during the Easter period.

The Easter weekend experiences increased traffic as people travel for holidays or to visit family. Authorities urge motorists to be cautious due to the rise in vehicles on the roads.

Thursday and Friday saw high traffic volumes, with around 2,000 vehicles per hour passing through tollgates on the N1 North and N3 South. The N4 East had 1,900 vehicles, and the N1 South had an average of 1,000 vehicles.

A total of 75,961 vehicles were inspected, leading to fines for 916,927 drivers for various violations. Unroadworthy vehicles are a significant concern, with 274 vehicles found to have defects.

Law enforcement operations continue throughout the holiday season, monitoring major routes and residential areas to ensure adherence to traffic laws.
